The Studio

Click for larger image!Steve’s Garage is not just the name of my studio, it’s exactly what it says…it’s my two car garage converted into a recording studio. I hired a contractor in Jan. 2002 to come in and build me a 12 x 12 control room and 12 x 12 drum booth in a 500 sq. ft. area which left a hallway between the two booths and created two smaller rooms by default. Everything is double sheetrocked with some super thick insulation between the outside wall and the two sheetrock layers. The booths are octagonal shaped with double paned glass windows in both of them. No, it’s not Ardent, Criteria, the Dallas Sound Lab or Electric Lady Land Studios or even the studio of my dreams (which any of the studios I mentioned could be), but it’s a functional space to lay down some clean sounding tracks with my friends.

Since my funds and space are limited I purchased a Roland VS-2480CD 24 Track Digital Audio Workstation with four VS8F-2 effects expansion boards. From a previous partnership with best friend (and guitar playin’ fool) Jimmy Lowrance in Reelworks Recording Studio, I had enough equipment (mics, monitors, effects, etc.) to set things up over here. Of course, I had to buy a few other things like a headphone amp, headphones, cabling etc., and I still have things that I want to buy to make this little space of mine all it can be. Later on down the road I’m thinking of going with maybe a Pro Tools setup.

Click for larger image!Besides the audio projects the Texas Department of Transportation hires me to do from time to time I work with a core of musicians (Mike Lang/Drums, Mike Wagliardo/Bass, Jimmy Lowrance and me/Guitar, Paul Harrington/Harmonica, Charles Stewart/Vocals) that I’ve known for close to 20 years. We’ve all played in several blues/rock bands in the Dallas/Ft.Worth area together and some of the things we record here will be posted on this site, so keep your eyes peeled for new tunes. Paul Harrington, Mike Wagliardo and I also work with the Tyrone Starks Band in the studio and in clubs around the Texas area, Tyrone is the drummer and lead vocalist, and we also have Michael Lee on guitar. If you like Texas style rockin blues then hopefully you’ll dig on what we’re doing. Thanks for taking the time to look and listen.
